The entire North Central Georgia Region was affected by freezing rain, snow, and ice on roadways late into Tuesday Night.

In Griffin and Spalding County many secondary streets became almost impassable late in to Tuesday night. Local Law Enforcement City of Griffin Police, Sheriffs Department, and Troopers from the Griffin Post of the Georgia State Patrol were busy with vehicles that ran off the roadway on many roads that contained black ice. In Griffin, the 6th Street bridge was a focal point when it was closed early Tuesday.  Several TV stations covering the Winter Storm reported live from the Bridge.  Highway 92 was extremely hazardous, as well as Highway 16 at the Spalding and Coweta Line which was closed by DOT personnel late Tuesday. In Griffin, North Hill Street near McIntosh Road was icing early Tuesday evening. South Pine Hill Road close to Georgia 16., West McIntosh Road at Highway 92, Bonnie Ridge Drive at Cheatham Road, and the Bridge at the Griffin Reservoir at Cheatham Road had a cover of  Ice by 7:30 pm. and Spalding, Griffin City, and DOT traffic units were busy putting down a mixture of salt on roadways and bridges.

In Lamar County and Barnesville, snow started falling in earnest at about 4 p.m. in the Northern portion of the County. The first treacherous driving conditions arose on overhead bridges in the county on the Bypass and other state highways. The DOT started spreading de-icer media on bridges and low lying areas late Tuesday afternoon.

Several drivers lost control of their vehicles in the City and Spalding County. Other Counties reported accidents from ice slick roads, but no serious injuries. Old Highway 41 north of Milner had frozen solid. County crews moved in with a spreader truck loaded with sand and helped the ice problem in th Milner area.

The bridges on Highway 41 near Milner and at Aldora had not been treated and were very slick. Officials of the DOT and Local Law enforcement continually reminded drivers to use extreme caution if driving was necessary.

Roads remained wet from additional heavy snow that affected the Griffin and Spalding Areas and Lamar County as temperatures started a fall. Temperature at 6:15 p.m. was 29 degrees and by 8:30 it was 22 in Griffin, and 24 in Barnesville. Temperatures are expected to be in the teens overnight with wind chills of 10 degrees. The Bypass was a complete sheet of white by 9:00 Tuesday night as most state highways and secondary roads in the Area.

Driving in Spalding County late Tuesday evening as well as Lamar and Pike was very hazardous even for citizens in four-wheel drive vehicles.

In Upson county Highway 19 was in fair shape except for low lying areas. The DOT urged all citizens in Upson to not drive unless it was necessary.  Many secondary roads in the area were iced over as temperatures began a fall from 29 at 6 pm to 24 degrees by 8:30.  Black Ice was a problem for drivers traveling throughout the north Central Georgia area from Griffin to Macon.

The sun we had on Wednesday has improved streets to a great degree in many areas however, standing water during the evening hours of Wednesday and early Thursday morning will refreeze. There will be several bridges that will have ice and black ice forming. Roadways in the Spalding, Fayette, henry, Pike, Lamar and Upson counties will become hazardous.
