FAYETTE SUPERIOR COURT

FAYETTE SUPERIOR COURT

Peachtree City’s former Police Chief pleaded guilty to reckless conduct Thursday afternoon in a Fayette County.

William McCollom has always stated that the shooting that left his ex-wife Margaret paralyzed, was not intentional. Investigators said McCollom was handling his service weapon while the couple was in bed, McCollom accidentally pulled the trigger, striking Margaret in the back.

He resigned from the department in March of this year. His indictment came in May.

District Attorney Scott Ballard told WKEU news that the DAs office always felt  always believed this shooting was an accident. That’s why we charged it as reckless conduct.

The McColloms were divorced at the time, but still living together.

Thursday in court, McCollom’s attorney said the divorcees are still living together in their new home in South Florida. That’s where McCollom will serve his sentence as a first-time offender.

The Griffin/Spalding Homeless Coalition held a meeting to discuss ways the address the homeless population in the county and city.  The meeting was held in the Training Room at the Griffin Police Department and was attended by a standing room only crowd.

Additionally, the featured speaker MSGT. (Ret.) Sandra Brownlee spoke of her organization DSP2’s recent growth into the Griffin/Spalding County area.

DSP2 stands for Discovering Soldiers Potential The Second Time Around and the mission is to assist in the eradication of homeless veterans in America.  “Over two-thirds of veterans experience a difficult time transitioning back into their communities,” Brownlee stated. “About one in five veterans surveyed were unemployed.  This and a disconnection between the veterans and available resources leads to veterans making up a large portion on the homeless population.  Our goal is to bring all veteran-related services together under one roof giving the soldier and their family a more efficient experience in meeting all of their transitional needs.”

Brownlee also stated that DSP2’s growth in Griffin/Spalding County would also serve to help non-veterans who are homeless as well.  “By partnering with community organizations and individuals to pool resources, we will be able to help veterans and non-veterans become more productive and viable member of the place they will call home.”

While DSP2 has been provided office space by Spalding County, the group is currently seeking more space in which to complete their roll-out in the community. “We really need a building to complete this process and begin serving the homeless population in this community,”  “We have the programs in place, we’re just looking for someone that can assist us by providing the space we need to house all the programs under one roof.”

Those looking to assist the Griffin/Spalding Homeless Coalition and DSP2 or simply seeking more information are can contact Pastor Ron Cook at 770-468-6606 or Don Taylor at 678-588-8007.

According to the Griffin Police Department a recent news story in the Griffin Daily News about the arrest of a Griffin School System High School Teacher, Steven Curtis Chapman age 51 of 701 Carver Road was not accurate.  The news story indicated that the arrest was made subject to a year old warrant. The juvenile victim in question had advised her mother a year ago that the first incident happened. When it happened again the victim’s mother took action, securing a warrant earlier this month that resulted in the arrest of Chapman.

On August 13, 2015 the Griffin Police Department received a report that Stephen Chapman, fifty one years of age who resides in Griffin, Georgia had allegedly raped and molested a juvenile female relative.   The alleged acts occurred in Griffin and on more than one occasion according to the complainant.   Sgt. Karen Yancy with the Criminal Investigations Division immediately opened a criminal investigation into the allegations.

Upon further investigation and conducting a forensic interview with the juvenile victim Sgt. Yancy filed the following charges against Mr. Chapman, aggravated child molestation, aggravated sexual battery, aggravated sodomy and rape.  The arrest warrants were issued on August 14, 2015 and Mr. Chapman was arrested later that same afternoon without incident.   He is currently being held at the Spalding County jail.

ERIC KENNETH COE ESCAPEE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS

WKEU has received more information on Eric Kenneth Coe, a Department of Corrections prisoner, who walked off a inmate work detail in Lamar County August the 12 th, and was caught Aug. 18 th after a routine traffic stop by North Carolina State Troopers in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. Coe was driving the Ford Ranger pickup he allegedly had stolen in North Georgia from Forsyth County. He previously allegedly stole a Ford Explorer from a local Lamar County man. That vehicle was recovered in Forsyth County.

Trooper Sam Corn pulled Coe over about 11:30 a.m. for not wearing his seat belt. A second trooper, Thayer Forsht, arrived shortly after the stop.

Coe gave officers the fake name of John Lim Barker and a fake date of birth of Jan. 6, 1994. Coe said he was on the way to visit his mother and that he only had five dollars.
The troopers ran the truck’s tag and learned it was stolen.

The troopers said Coe could not provide phone numbers of anyone who could confirm his identity and eventually confessed.

Coe was alone when he was apprehended in North Carolina. An investigation is ongoing in Forsyth County where authorities believe a person or persons may have aided Coe in his continued escape.
Coe will be returned to the Georgia Department of Corrections where he was serving time for Violation of Parole.  He now faces several other charges and escape from Georgia Department of Corrections custody.
