Lem Watkins was a dear friend. I was honored to have him guide me when I was in his classes and it was even more an honor to represent the Griffin Spalding School System in the then DCT State speech contest that was held at Jekyll Island Georgia. I was working at WKEU while in High School. Through his and Mrs. Julia Elliott’s guidance we won the state contest that year. Lem was a dear friend, my advisor, and mentor until his untimely death. He and Mrs. Julia Elliott have very special paces in my heart. They were great teachers and always had students first in their daily work, and thoughts. Teachers of this caliber are solely missed today.
