Convicted arsonist Stephen Brehaut was ordered to jail pending a July probation hearing by Superior Court Judge Bill Fears in Lamar County superior court Thursday.

Brehaut had been sentenced to 20 years on probation, ordered to pay $109, 241 in restitution and cleanup the Lighthouse Restaurant which he confessed to torching in 2012.

He only did part of the clean-up and was in arrears on his restitution in the amount of $6753.17, having not made a payment since December.

“At that time, we will take up your first offender status. You are looking at some serious prison time. Do not come up here again and tell me you have a lawyer when you don’t,” Judge Fears admonished.

Brehaut was handcuffed in the courtroom and seated with the rest of the cuffed prisoners. Just before noon, He is cruelty being held in the Lamar County Sheriffs Department Jail.

NEWS RELEASE

Georgia State Troopers Preparing for Memorial Day Weekend Patrols

The Memorial Day holiday weekend is soon approaching. Colonel Mark W. McDonough, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, said the 78-hour holiday patrol period will begin Friday, May 22 at 6 p.m. and end midnight on Memorial Day. Troopers and Motor Carrier Officers will be conducting roadchecks, high visibility patrols, and concentrated patrols across the state strictly enforcing seat belt laws and watching for impaired drivers.

“Speed, a lack of seat belt use, and an impaired driver make for a deadly combination on our roads,” Colonel McDonough said.Last year during Memorial Day weekend, Georgia State troopers investigated 455 traffic crashes that resulted in 299 injuries, and nine traffic fatalities.“If you will be traveling this holiday period, make sure everyone is properly restrained, obey the posted speed limit, and designate a sober driver if alcohol consumption will be in your plans,” the commissioner added. In addition to the traffic crash investigations last year, troopers arrested 322 people for driving under the influence while issuing 7,492 citations and 11,137 warnings.

Use caution as you travel this holiday weekend. Traffic will be heavy as graduation ceremonies, festivals and vacation travelers will add to the normal weekend traffic.  “Celebrate the holiday period responsibly and keep safety at the forefront of everything you will do,” Colonel McDonough said.

Today is also the kick-off of All American Buckle-Up Week across the nation. Now through Monday, state highway patrols and state police agencies from across the United States and Canada are joining together to educate the public on the importance of wearing seat belts while traveling in motor vehicles.

NOTE:  The holiday traffic fatality count will be posted and updated throughout the holiday weekend on the Georgia Department of Public Safety web site: http://www.dps.georgia.gov.

Fireworks: Fun and Dangerous

SPARKLERS

SPARKLERS

Fireworks can be fun and exciting, but they can also be dangerous if the proper safety precautions are not taken.  Agent Charleston McClendon of Allstate Insurance Company is teaming up with the Georgia Arson Control Board to remind the citizens of Spalding County to make safety a main priority if they choose to handle legal fireworks.

According to McClendon, “By following a standard set of firework guidelines, our community can greatly reduce the chance of injury.” McClendon alsooffers the following guidelines to help minimize safety hazards:

Adult Supervision

  • Even legal fireworks should only be used with close adult supervision. In Georgia, no one younger than 18 years of age can purchase sparklers. Adults should always be present when lighting or handling fireworks. Never allow young children to light or handle fireworks.  Sparklers can burn at temperatures as high as 1800 degrees.

Use Only Legal Products

  • The law states that the definition of prohibited fireworks shall not include: “Wire or wood sparklers of 100 grams or less of mixture per item; other sparkling items which are non-explosive and non-aerial and contain 75 grams or less of chemical compound per tube or a total of 200 grams or less for multiple tubes; snake and glow worms; trick noise makers which include paper streamers, party poppers, string poppers, snappers, and drop pops each consisting of 0.25 grains or less of explosive mixture.”

Look for Labels and Read the Instructions

  • The law requires instructions and warnings labels.
  • Always keep a hose and a bucket of water nearby in case of emergencies.

Outdoors Only

  • Use sparklers outdoors, only in clear areas, away from houses, buildings, and dry grass.
  • Be sure to use them only on flat hard surfaces.

Let Sleeping Sparklers Lie

  • Do not try to relight sparklers that do not ignite. Wait 15 to 20 minutes, then douse and soak them with water and throw them away.

Protect Your Pets.

  • The sound of sparklers often frightens animals.

Pike County Sheriff’ Jimmy Thomas advised WKEU news that late Sunday evening his deputies responded to a 911 call of a shooting incident at 1880 Cook Road.  The caller advised the Pike 911 center that an altercation had occurred between himself and his father, and he had shot his father.  He also said that he would kill any law enforcement officer that came to the residence. Griffin Spalding School Board member Michael Kendall has filed a mandamus law suit against Griffin RESA, and the Griffin Spalding Board of Education in Relation to the applications RESA, the agency tasked with conducting a search process and announcements to fill the Superintendents position in the school system, after Dr. Curtis Jones accepted a position as the Bibb County Superintendent.

Kendal’s suit alleges that RESA and the Board of Education are illegally withholding the applications for School Superintendent and preventing him Kendall from carrying out his legal responsibility to hire a qualified superintendent.

On Monday afternoon May 11th, WKEU news talked with Board Attorney Tim Shepherd about the law suit.

CLICK  TO HEAR THE INTERVIEW WITH ATTORNEY SHEPHERD

The Board of Education issued the following Press Release Monday afternoon.

The Griffin-Spalding County Board of Education was served with a lawsuit this morning by one of its members.

Michael Kendall filed a lawsuit against the Griffin-Spalding Board of Education on Monday, May 11, 2015. In his suit, Kendall, who is also a member of the Board of Education, complains about the process by which the school board is conducting the search for a new superintendent of schools.

The school board had previously agreed to employ the services of Griffin RESA to assist in conducting the superintendent search.  On March 30, 2015, the school board with Kendall in attendance voted unanimously to approve the search process.  The board is currently following the approved process in conducting the superintendent search.

On Tuesday, May 5, 2015, the school board met in a called meeting for the purpose of reviewing the applications that were received as part of the search process.
Thursday, May 7, 2015, Mr. Kendall requested that he be given additional time to review the applications.

Contrary to Kendall’s public statements, arrangements were made for Kendall to have additional time to review the applications.

James Westbury, board chair, stated “It is disappointing that Mr. Kendall has chosen to file this merit less lawsuit against his fellow school board members.  The board is following the procedures in the superintendent search that were unanimously approved by the board members.  When Mr. Kendall asked for additional time to review the applications, the board, in conjunction with Dr. Stephanie Gordy of Griffin RESA, made arrangements to accommodate his request.  The board intends to continue the process of finding the best qualified superintendent to lead our school system and will not allow Mr. Kendall to disrupt the process with this frivolous lawsuit.”
