At the most recent meeting of the City of Griffin Board of Commissioners, a pair of citizens were issued commendations for their bravery in the face of imminent danger which likely saved others serious injury or worse.
City of Griffin Fire Chief Tommy Jones addressed the commissioners and honored Ronald Graham, Jr. and Chris Stanley with certificates of commendation for their heroism in separate fire incidents.
On the afternoon of Saturday, June 15, the city fire department responded to a call of a structure fire at 616 West Poplar Street. The building was heavily involved by the time units made their arrival on the scene. Ignoring the danger to himself, Graham went into the burning building on two separate occasions to help lead neighbors to safety.
In the other incident, which occurred in the afternoon of Friday, July 5, Stanley, an employee of the Atlanta Gas Light Company, noticed heavy smoke pouring from a structure located at 327 Hammond Drive while working nearby. He immediately entered into the apartment to rescue one resident then reentered the structure to bring out a second resident who was confined to a wheelchair.
In addition to their letters of commendation, both heroes received standing ovations from those in attendance at the meeting.

The goal of this project is to identify inefficiencies within the system and to monetize inefficiencies to make capital improvements at the Law Enforcement Center.

The Spalding County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved this contract at their Regular Meeting on June 3, 2019 and authorized NORESCO, a leading national energy services company to perform energy conservation services and installations at buildings owned by Spalding County.

This agreement calls for NORESCO to analyze a number county facilities to determine and design potential energy conservation measures. Spalding County officials will then have the opportunity to proceed with implementation of the proposed design. Energy and water consumption savings from the improvements are expected and it is hoped that the anticipated savings from these efforts will pay for the replacement of the Law Enforcement Center roof and potentially other building system and facility upgrades.

William Wilson, County Manager stated: “The contract with NORESCO is moving in a positive direction to not only access and make our current buildingsmore energy efficient. Then utilizing the savings on energy bills to fund improvements to county buildings.”

The scope and value of this project will be specified as the audit work continues.

The Spalding County Office of Homeland Security in conjunction with the Spalding County Fire Department will be presenting a REFRESHER course for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program participants. This refresher course is designed for those who have completed the initial program.

CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations for citizens who may be on their own during the initial moments of a disaster. Knowing the right actions to take can make a difference.

The CERT Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Through CERT training, citizens can learn to manage utilities and put out small fires; cope with the three life-threatening injuries by opening airways, controlling bleeding and treating for shock; provide basic medical aid; search for and rescue victims safely; and organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective.

The CERT REFRESHER program will concentrate on emergency / disaster planning, safety and medical skills. This additional step is designed to reinforce the lessons learned in the CERT program and continue the coordination of efforts between emergency services and the people they serve. The REFRESHER training will assist in enhancing the importance of an ongoing training program and the need for continual planning.

CERT training classes are scheduled for 3 weeks to begin on Monday September 16, 2019 at 2 pm- 5pm., with the final class being Monday September 30, 2019, anyone interested in participating in these classes should contact:

Beckham Suspended 80 Games by MLB

Griffin native and current Seattle Mariners utility player Tim Beckham has been suspended 80 games without pay by Major League Baseball after testing positive for the performance enhancing drug Stanozolol which is in violation of the league’s joint drug prevention and treatment program.

The 29 year old Beckham, who was taken with the top overall selection in the 2008 draft by the Tampa Bay Rays, denied taking the anabolic steroid knowingly. A statement released on his behalf by the Major League Baseball Players Association reads:
“I was recently notified that I had tested positive for Stanozolol, a prohibited substance under MLB’s Joint Drug Agreement. I was given a product from a trusted source who had advised me that it was safe to take. Regrettably, the product was tainted. I exercised my rights under the Joint Drug Agreement and presented my case to an independent arbitrator. While I am disappointed with the result, I respect the ruling and understand my responsibilities under the Joint Drug Agreement. I accept full responsibility for putting myself in this position. I sincerely apologize to the Mariners’ organization, the fans, my teammates and my family for this mistake. I look forward to resuming my career once my suspension has been served.”
Because there are only 48 games left in the season for the Mariners, the remaining 32 games of Beckham’s 80 game ban will be served at the beginning of the 2020 season.
He signed a 1 year, 1.75 million dollar deal with Seattle in January and could be under team control for next season as he is arbitration eligible before becoming a free agent the following year.
In 88 games for the Mariners this season, Beckham hit .237 with 15 home runs. In six seasons in the major leagues, he has a lifetime batting average of .249 with 63 career homers while playing for the Rays, Baltimore Orioles and Mariners.
