GRIFFIN POLICE DEPARTMENT
Subject Rescued from Bridge
On Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at approximately 11:30 p.m. a Griffin Police Officer on patrol noticed a male on the bridge on State Route 92 over State Route 3.
The responding Griffin Police Officers made contact with the male and realized the male had a knife pointed at his abdomen. The male told the officer that he would jump if the officer approached. The officer recognized that the individual was suffering a mental health crisis and instituted their Crisis Intervention techniques while requesting assistance from other officers. Both State Routes 92 and 3 were closed during this event to prevent injury to the male in crisis as well as responding officers.
Once other officers arrived on scene, they established effective communications with the individual. These officers had recently received mandatory training on incidents of this type and were able to successfully de-escalate the situation and remove the individual from the bridge without injury to anyone.
The male was transported to Spalding Regional Wellstar Hospital for examination and treatment and faces no criminal charges.
