GRIFFIN SPALDING AIRPORT AUTHORITY.

 GRIFFIN SPALDING AIRPORT AUTHORITY.

At the monthly meeting of the Griffin-Spalding County Airport Authority Monday May 9th:

City Manager, Kenny Smith, was present and and addressed the Authority. He said the Archway Partnership would like to hold a Cherrette for the community to have input on what to do with the old airport. They would like to have a concept of what the area could be. The Authority agreed they would welcome community input.

Chairman Morrow appointed City Commissioner David Brock to the Legal & Insurance committed.

Chairman Morrow reported there has been some activity since our last meeting and some disapointments.

The new airport layout plan that was last approved by the FAA reduces the size of the new airport. They did not reduce the runway just the amount of land around the airport. An airport our size can have no more than 600 acres. We had space on our Business Corporate Ramp for 8 businesses. They cut us back to 4. And Sapelo road is now showing on the plans as a dead end road ending at the aiprort property. The Authority will try and get the FAA to go back to what was previously agreed upon.

At our April meeting we were promised a decision in one week on the 4 towers located near the new airport. Now the decision may be sometime in May.

Phase I Land Acqisition is still proceeding.  Some offers may be made soon.

The Utillity relocation was approved last month and we are waiting on the FAA.

The sale of the Sheriff property, at the old airport, to the county was denied by the FAA.  We must wait until the new airport is closer to completion.

The sale of the Golf Course property to the City was approved by the FAA.

The Sheriff property, helecopter pad, and the golf course property are considered non-essential property  to the operation of the airport and can be sold.

The Authority:
Discussed at length the new GS-Airport leasing agreement. It was approved by a 4-3 vote.

Airport Director Robert Mohl addressed the Authority with the need to start the process to get a 3 digit identifier for the new airport. It may take as long as 5 years to obtain the 3 digit identifier.

Robert also inquired about naming the new airport. To start  the ball rolling he offered two names for consideration.  Charlotte Frye an Janet Bragg.

Charlotte Frye, born in Wichita, Kansas, Charlotte Barbara Fogg moved to Atlanta in 1898. She married Augustus Frye, M.D. in 1916 and lived in Griffin until her death in 1983. She flew the mail from Griffin to Atlanta and became one of the first female airmail pilots. Charlotte Frye was enshrined May 18, 1991, as one of Georgia’s pioneer women pilots.

Janet Harmon Waterford Bragg was an amateur aviator. She was the first African-American woman to hold a commercial pilot license. Janet Harmon was born on March 24, 1907, in Griffin, Georgia. Mrs. Janet Bragg died April 11, 1993, in Blue Island, IL.

The Authority went into closed session.

drop in remembrance of the pioneer pilots, like local pilot Doug Davis, who participated in those early promotions.

Vintage Day best represents the Museum’s continuing efforts to re-create the Original Atlanta Airport as it was in the 1920s. People who lived in the 1920s experienced a fascination with the emerging technology of both the Automobile and the Aeroplane. Barnstorming, air shows, and flying circus events were popular forms of entertainment for families before TV. Join them Saturday June 7th at Candler Field to step back in time.

WKEU recently contacted Ron Alexander of Candler Field museum and he advised WKEU news that as a non profit organization and tax exempt organization the Banner depicting a fund raiser for the Vintage Day was placed at the WKEU studios, as they they for several years and WKEU is proud to support the Candler Field Museum with all their fundraiser’s.  There were several banners placed on private property in Griffin with owners approval calling attention to this great family event.  The City of Griffin is now charging non profit organizations, and others, a fee for placing each sign on private property even though the owner had given approval for the sign at no cost. WKEU contacted Dick Morrow for information about the fee and was advised that the supreme court recently ruled that non profit organizations are no different than other for profits using a sign and now everyone needing to announce a special vent for children, or special events, like cancer runs, blood drives, students and events on school property, etc, must pay a sign fee whether the sign of any size, or banner are on private property or not.
It is amazing that an organization like churches, and genuine non profit organizations such as Candler Field museum that use the money from fund raisers for the betterment and future of youth of our community, (like their great A and P school that will qualify students for a future in aviation with major airlines, and is part of the Griffin Spalding School System College and Career academy, in the aircraft industry) cannot be supported by property owners with out a Government fee for a small temporary sign being necessary. The Supreme Court and our Government need a new start.  Each fee to place sign or banner is 35.00 payable to the City. Does the city need money that bad to squeeze every citizen for every cent they can. Where in the ruling by the Supreme Court, whether Georgia or US, say the city has to charge any thing?
Where does common sense to support our community prevail?  As a special note all politicians, naturally, with their signs are exempt from the fee. In the realm of being fair why should politicians be exempt from the fee just because they are running for office at any level?
It is interesting that The US Congress has passed a regulation that public educational radio stations, and non-commercial stations must run free advertisements for Federal Politicians Campaigning, if the station has the extra time, when there is a FCC regulation there prevents Non Commercial and Educational Broadcaster from any type local political involvement of selling advertisements to local politicians. .
We have gone over board in the opinion of many Americas and this broadcaster at, City County, State and Federal levels of Government that have lost complete association with the citizens and reality.  What happened to supporting citizens on our community with what is right???????  City, County, State and Federal Governments work for the citizens as an entity that is, not supposed, nor was it established for, a for profit venture. None of them can live within a budget but expect citizens to be subservient to their will……Not the way it was intended.
The Biggest fight in heaven will be between our early foundering fathers and politicians that have forgotten where the rubber meets the road and exactly who funds their existance.

As a part of the Red Cross Home Fire Preparedness Campaign, Griffin Fire-Rescue and the Georgia Fire Educators Association installed over 200 new smoke detectors and replaced over 50 batteries in homes across northeast Griffin. The event took place on Thursday, May 12, and included houses located between Lyndon Avenue and Broad Street and between Melrose Avenue and 15th Street.

“Nearly two-thirds of all fire deaths happen in homes without smoke alarms or functioning units,” stated Griffin Fire Chief, Tommy Jones. “We selected this area to do the smoke detector blitz due to the recent fire deaths that have occurred in the area. We want to make sure we’re being proactive about saving lives.”

Working smoke alarms reduce the chances of dying in a fire by nearly 50 percent. They are a critical first step for staying safe, but in order to be effective, they have to be working properly. Griffin Fire-Rescue would like to remind everyone to install smoke alarms on every level of your home, outside every sleeping area and in each bedroom.  Use Daylight Savings Time as a reminder to check your smoke alarms. Replace conventional batteries at least once a year, even if alarms are wired directly into your home’s electrical system.  Use these and other fire safety tips to ensure that your home is well prepared in case of fire.
