FULL VIEW OF THE USS ARIZONA AND THE MEMORIAL

Today is December 7th. At about 8am on December 7th, 1941 the Japanese Navy launched a sneak attack at Pearl Harbor . More than 2400 Americans were killed in that assault, that left the Pacific Fleet in shambles, with only a hand full of vessels afloat. All the Battleships were either Damaged beyond restoration like the USS Arizona which has become the memorial of America’s entry into World War II. Most all aircraft at the Army and Navy fields nearby were destroyed.

In honor of those great Americans we ask everyone to say a silent prayer for those that lost their lives, and those precious World War II veterans living and those that have passed. These are Americas true heroes. For these Soldiers, Airmen, Marines, Army, Cost Guard many of which are in their late 80′s and 90′s literally saved America and the World as we know it today. We all owe them so very much.

Notice to Our Loyal Football Audience

$

During our Friday night broadcast of Griffin’s semifinal round win in the AAAA state football playoffs, we at WKEU AM-FM announced that we would look into the possibility of adding the Lamar County AA championship game to our broadcast scheduled for Saturday, December 14. However, after thinking the matter over, we have come to the conclusion that sometimes it is better to take a financial loss than to potentially jeopardize a longstanding friendship so we will abandon our plans to cover the AA final from the Georgia Dome.

WKEU AM-FM was granted broadcast permission by the official voice of Lamar County football, WBAF in Barnesville, to carry the game, but in the light of the fact that the station is owned by longtime friend Paul Pleoner we could not in good conscience broadcast the game knowing it could take away so much as a single listener from WBAF.

We regret any inconvenience our premature announcement may have caused and we sincerely hope you will join us on WKEU AM-FM, www.wkeuradio.com, or on your smart phone devices for every play of the AAAA state final this Saturday when the Bears tangle with Carrollton. The game, from the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, is scheduled to begin at 5:30. Our broadcast, commencing with the Griffin Bears’ Tailgate Show, will be on the air to paint the scene for the contest beginning at 3:30.

The City of Griffin Board of Commissioners Meeting Was Held Tuesday Night.

The City of Griffin Board of Commissioners held their regular schedule meeting Tuesday night.

The board recognized Commissioner Shaheer Beyah for his service to the City of Griffin from 2010 through 2013. Chairperson Joanne Todd presented Commissioner Beyah with a plaque for his service not only to the City of Griffin but to his district as well. Commissioner Beyah stated ”he had enjoyed working with this Board of Commissioners and I will be back”.

The commissioners recognized Chuck Smith, Supervisor in the Street Department, as the October 2013 “Strongest Link” award recipient. He was nominated after the city received a letter from Cindy Duncan. The letter read, “I just wanted to let you know that I received a call a little while ago from Chuck Smith, one of your employees with the Street Department. He was calling me to inform me that one of his workers found about 13 pages of my Mom’s personal medical information next to a Liberty transport van somewhere there in Griffin. It appears the transport people must have dropped the information as they have transported her from Brightmoor nursing facility to the Orthopedic doctor there near the hospital. This information is obviously VERY highly sensitive as it contained complete medical instructions for my Mom as well as social security information and contact information for both me and my brother, as well. I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate Mr. Smith going to the effort to contact me to let me know he found this information. Not only that, but he personally offered to take the information to Brightmoor for me.His actions are above and beyond what anybody should expect of an employee and I do hope you recognize him for this situation. It could have caused a huge problem for my family if it had gotten into the wrong hands.Thank you so much, Cindy Duncan

The “Strongest Link” Award is given monthly to a deserving employee who has demonstrated excellent performance and productivity, loyalty, professional pride and other noteworthy accomplishments. The recognized employee receives one day off with pay, a gift certificate from a local restaurant, a “Strongest Link” plaque and the symbolic “chain” they will be the custodian of until a subsequent employee is recognized.

The Commissioners approved: to amend the City of Griffin’s Fiscal Year 2013-2014 Operating and Capital Budget to transfer one Yard Waste position to Residential Collection and eliminate three remaining Yard Waste positions.

Johnquavious Patillo 23   Tracy Johnson 23              Johnny Patillo age 45
Sheriff Jimmy Thomas of the Pike County Sheriff’s Office has advised WKEU news that his Investigators arrested three suspects in an attempted credit card fraud scheme on December 12 th at a local business. Employees of two different businesses received phone calls from an unknown individual wanting to make large purchases over the telephone using a credit card. The caller identified himself as a business owner from another state that was in town and needed to obtain the items for a local job they were completing. The business employees became suspicious and contacted the Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators were able to ascertain that the credit card number that was being used had not been authorized for the purchases by the cardholder. When the three suspects arrived to pick up their expected purchase they were confronted and taken into custody by Deputies.
The three suspects, Johnquavious Patillo ( 23  years of age), Johnny Patillo (45 years of age) and Tracy Johnson (23 years of age) all of LaGrange. They face numerous counts of identity theft and credit card fraud in Georgia and Alabama.

Further investigation into the trios activities have revealed that they had purchased a zero turn lawn mower in Spalding County just before arriving in Pike County with a stolen credit card number. Purchases in the Auburn, Alabama area were also determined to have been made by fraudulent means.
Investigators collaborated with LaGrange Police Department officers to conduct a search warrant on the Patillo residence in LaGrange. The search warrant resulted in charges of Trafficking Cocaine being brought against Johnquavious Patillo in Troup County.
All three suspects are currently in the Pike County Jail facing charges of Identity Theft, Financial transaction card fraud and bringing stolen property across state lines. Additional charges are forthcoming from the other involved jurisdictions which will result in their extradition to Alabama at a later date.

GRIFFIN BEARS STATE CHAMPIONS

Following what has been a hugely successful year in region play. The Griffin Bears took their undefeated record into the final game of State Championship play off action at the Georgia Dome on Saturday December 14 th, 2013. The Bears took the field at 6 pm, and took on the Carrollton Trojans. The Trojans struck early with two touchdowns. The Bears battled back to take control of the game, and never looked back. The Griffin Bears were victorious by a final score 56 to 35. This Bears team has become now a legend in sports history. Coach Steve DeVoursney had instilled in his team the integrity, pride, and price of hard work and  what it takes to be Champions. This team will forever be remembered as a class group of Great athletes that realized what it is to have bonded friends from this Championship. They will all be forever brothers, and honorable men that others will aspire to be. The Rock 88.9 FM and WKEU AM 1450 Broadcast crew and all our staff has considered it an honor to have broadcast each game this season.

We all join to wish each team member the very best in years to come but your dedication, support of fellow players, and your dignity and honor will be a beacon for others to follow. To Coach Steve DeVoursney we say thank you Griffin and Spalding County are indeed better because of your work with the School System, and our children as you have given them the direction for success in the future.

When the Bears loaded up to travel to the Georgia Dome, Coach DeVoursney had his team stop at the First Assembly Church and pray for their fellow man and team members for their safety and a good game without injuries. This speaks volumes of a dedicated Coach, and what he means to our community and children. The first out right State Champion ship since 1942 is now history for Griffin and Spalding County. We can all take a lesson from this great team that NEVER gave up when the chips were down, but fought every second in every game. This is what has made them State Champions. Thank you Griffin Bears for a life time of memories, and the great reputation you have given this community. When you stop and consider the future of America with young men like this great Griffin team coming on line lead by Coach Steve DeVoursney and his staff the future of America will be in very capable hands.

BEARS COMPLETE PERFECT SEASON, WIN STATE CROWN

$

There are almost limitless adjectives that could be used to describe the Griffin Bears’ performance in the 2013 AAAA Championship Game but the one that fits best is the noun “champion” as the team captured its first outright title since 1942 when it beat the Carrollton Tigers 56-35 Saturday night at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The shootout proved to be the highest scoring state championship game in Georgia high school football history.
Contained within the Bears’ remarkable team performance were many great individual efforts as every Bear that got on the field made his presence felt. Jacquez Parks led the stat parade by throwing for 337 yards and 4 touchdowns, while the senior, in his final game in a Griffin uniform, added another 220 and a score on the ground. Fellow senior Trey Willis posted numbers every bit as impressive with 7 catches for 168 yards with 3 touchdowns and a 97 yard kickoff return for a score thrown in to boot.
After falling behind the Trojans 14-0 in the opening 7 and a half mintues of the game, the Bears got on the board for the first time with 3:13 left in the quarter when Parks hit Willis on a 30 yard pass play. Carrollton answered on its next play from scrimmage to make the score 21-7 but Griffin too answered back, Parks finding a streaking Willis down the middle from 53 yards out to make the score 21-14 at the end of the first period.
A field goal early in the 2nd extended the Trojan lead to 10 but again the Bears wasted little time drawing closer; Parks needed just one play to make it a 24-21 game by hitting Keyston Fuller on an 80 yard strike. The Griffin defense forced a fumble on its next series and the offense would cash in on the good field position, Telly Sloan doing the honors from a yard away to put Griffin on top 28-24. Carrollton answered with a lengthy drive of its own but the game swung permanently into the Bears’ favor when the Trojans fumbled deep in Griffin territory only to have Ryan Cochrane snatch the ball off the turf then follow a convoy down the left sideline for a 90 yard scoop and score. The Trojans showed good fight, getting its second field goal of the night with 6 seconds left in the half to make it a 35-27 game at the break.
The Bears’ offense didn’t miss a beat during the intermission. It needed just 1:01 of the clock to complete an 80 yard drive capped off by a Parks to Willis 11 yard touchdown. To its credit, Carrollton responded with a Trey Chivers touchdown on its next possession, his 4th of the night, and that score, plus a 2 point conversion, cut the Griffin lead to 42-35.
That was as close as the Trojans would get, however. Willis took the ensuing kickoff near the right sideline, made the first man miss, got a key block, and rambled 97 yards into the end zone to extend the Griffin advantage; later Parks clinched Griffin’s title conquest with a nifty 73 yard scoring run that came with 8:08 left on the clock.
The win gave Griffin its first state title since 1978 when the Bears won a share of the championship after playing to a draw with Valdosta, a tie considered highly controversial to this day by the Griffin fans in attendance that night in south Georgia.
WKEU sends the entire Bear Nation: the players, head coach Steve Devoursney and his dedicated staff, the booster club and the fans at large its most sincere thanks and congratulations on completing the most successful season in the school’s storied football history.

An update has been issued as of Tuesday Morning by Upson County Sheriffs Officials in relation to two individuals who own a local restaurant, the Garden Patch in Barnesville that were assaulted in their home
Monday night.
James Ross Reeves and his wife, Linda, who own The Garden Patch in Barnesville, had been shopping at Walmart in Thomaston. When they arrived home they were accosted when they opened their back door and shot.
Updated reports Tuesday morning indicated that Ross Reeves was shot twice in the shoulder and a third bullet grazed his head. His wife, Linda Reeves, was shot once in the shoulder. Robbery is not thought to be the motive.
Investigators report he still had his wallet, and nothing was apparently taken from their home.
They were shot at their residence at 311 Pleasant Grove Road in Yatesville.  The search was conducted of a wooded area near the home but investigators left the scene about 2 a.m. Tuesday morning without making an arrest.
Ross Reeves was airlifted by Helicopter Air ambulance to the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon from his home.
The crime scene was processed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation who has been called in to assist in the investigation.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Reeves are expected to recover from their wounds. They remained at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon as of Tuesday morning.
Police K 9 units from Lamar County were called in to help with the search for the shooters. Two helicopters were in the area. One was a life flight unit. The other, which was equipped with forward looking infrared radar (FLIR) system that can locate heat sources on the ground.  Upson County law enforcement officials resumed the search at daylight on Tuesday morning.
