GRIFFIN POLICE DEPARTMENT

Since December 8, 2019, there have been a series of incidents in the City of Griffin where gunfire has resulted in dwellings being struck by projectiles from weapons of various calibers. The incident locations have been 110 Morris Street, Griffin Georgia (Morris Street Apartments) on the 8th and 10th, as well as 307 E. Quilly Street, Griffin, Georgia on the 8th with 322 N. 5th Griffin, Georgia involved on the 11th of December. There was also a “disturbance” with a large crowd reported at the Morris Street location on December 6th which may have some relationship to this on-going series of incidents. Investigations reveal that one of the residences struck by gunfire (E. Quilly) appears to be an incident where the perpetrators mistakenly targeted the wrong location.

Obviously, these types of events cause great concern in the community and with the Griffin Police Department and we will be devoting all available assets to resolve and prevent this type of behavior. Each of these residences were occupied at the time of the assaults and it is a “miracle” that no one was injured. Since the first incident an investigation has been launched and it appears obvious that these incidents are linked to gang behavior and on-going criminal activity which we believe may be related to gang activities associated with locations and incidents that have occurred in Clayton County, Henry County and unincorporated Spalding County. At least one of the outside incidents involved a homicide. It appears from our investigations that individuals associated with the “Crips” and “Bloods” criminal street gangs are engaged in a series of retaliations against one another that gives rise to these incidents here, in Griffin, as some of the suspected participants and suspects live or frequent Griffin.

The two “Night Shift” patrol squads of the Griffin Police Department have been dealing with the issues in addition to their normal duties. Additional manpower and resources have been assigned to help the shifts deal with these issues and will be tasked specifically with putting a halt to this dangerous criminal activity. Investigators are actively working a Criminal Street Gang investigation into these incidents and Gang Act charges will be brought against any and all involved parties. At present, some of the participants have been identified and the investigation continues.

Chief Yates stated “We will use every tool at our disposal, every officer we have and every resource we can acquire to crush this gang presence and we will be engaging it immediately while making every effort to prosecute the participants to the fullest extent of what the law allows. If you choose to live this lifestyle (Criminal Gangs) stop, leave Griffin or suffer the consequences”.

The Griffin Police Department would like to thank the citizens of Griffin for their continued involvement and partnership with us in an effort to keep our City safe.

Their teamwork, following the game plan, and their tenacity, led to this suspect being taken into custody. We also want to say, “Thank you” for the leads and tips that were provided to us by the public that helped solve this case

SPALDING FIRE DEPARTMENT

NOVEMBER 21, 2019 PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION (770) 467-4233

Spalding County is happy to announce the appointment of Mr. Michael Byrd as the new Deputy Fire Chief of Operations for the Spalding County Fire Department. Mr. Byrd will be assuming the position currently held by Deputy Fire Chief Jamie Clark who will be retiring in December after 34 ½ years of service with the Spalding County Fire Department.

Deputy Fire Chief Clark has served as the Deputy Fire Chief of Operations since October 2013, and through his leadership, has helped make the Spalding Fire Department one of the premier fire departments in the region. While Deputy Chief Clark will be missed, he is confident in the selection of Mr. Byrd and feels that he will be leaving the future of the Spalding County Fire Department in capable hands.

Mr. Byrd is a resident of Spalding County and this position will bring him full circle, back to where he began his career as a Spalding County Volunteer Firefighter in 1986. In 1989, Mr. Byrd went to work for the City of Morrow Fire Department where he worked for eighteen (18) years, moving up through the ranks to become Deputy Commander/Training Officer. In 2008, Mr. Byrd accepted the position of Deputy Chief at the Georgia Fire Academy. Through his work at the Georgia Fire Academy, Mr. Byrd has developed and instructed courses for Fire Officer II through IV. In addition to these duties, he is responsible for the hiring and supervision of a full-time staff and over 100 part-time adjunct instructors. Mr. Byrd is also an adjunct instructor with the Southern Crescent Technical College’s fire training program.

Mr. Byrd has a Bachelor’s degree from Shorter College, a Masters’ degree in Public Safety Leadership from Mercer University and obtained his Executive Fire Officer from the National Fire Academy in 2015.

Mr. Byrd’s wide range of experience combined with the personal and professional relationships he already has within our community, makes him a perfect fit for our organization. Mr. Byrd will start work on November 21, in a part-time capacity, while tying up loose ends at the Georgia Fire Academy. He is expected to begin full-time on December 16.

FAYETTE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT

Sheriff Barry Babb of Fayette County said that the theft of weapons from a Fayetteville residence was among several incidents reported across Fayette County.

Fayetteville officers at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 24 were called to a Hunters Lane residence off South Jeff Davis Drive in reference to a theft, according to Fayetteville Police Department spokesperson Ann Marie Burdett.

The resident told officers that, upon returning home, he found a pile of 9mm ammunition for his firearm placed on the bed, rather than on the dresser where he remembered putting them, said Burdett.

Burdett said the man told officers he became concerned and checked to see if his handgun, shotgun and crossbow were located where they are normally stored. The weapons were missing.

Officers were told the door was locked when he left the residence. However, there did not appear to be any signs of forced entry, Burdett noted.

In unincorporated Fayette County, a burglary was reported on Nov. 27 at an Oak Street residence off Ga. Highway 54 West.

Sheriff Barry Babb said Investigators reported that a rear window of the home was forced open between 10 p.m. and midnight, with electronics stolen from the home.

An entering auto incident was reported at a residence on Lake Circle Drive off Helen Sams Parkway. The unlocked vehicle had a bag stolen that contained hand tools and electronics.

In Peachtree City, there were two entering auto incidents at the Line Creek Nature Area off Ga. Highway 54 West.

The owner of one of the vehicles said the passenger side window had been damaged and a wallet was stolen, according to police reports.

The second vehicle was also entered between 4-5 p.m. after the front passenger window was damaged. A purse was stolen in that incident.
