GHSA Air Rifle Competitors Move Up to NCAA Rifle Competition Rosemary Kramer former student at Upson-Lee High School sets record in GSU NCAA air rifle competition.

In 2019 Rosemary Kramer of Georgia Southern University set an NCAA record in air rifle competition in qualifying for the finals at the NCAA Championship. She fired a 599 out of 600 and then finished third in the finals. She was also 1st team All American. Rosemary was GHSA Champion in 2015 when competing for Upson-Lee High School.

GHSA began three-position air rifle competition in school year 1991-92. Its first competitor to move up to compete in NCAA rifle competition was in SY 1993-94.

Through SY 2018-19 ninety-one former GHSA three-position air riflery competitors have gone on to compete in NCAA competitions (41 females and 50 males); 16 at military service academies, 29 at other out of state universities, 44 at Georgia universities and two who competed both out of state and then in Georgia.

Most GHSA competitors begin competing in GHSA air rifle with no prior experience in the sport. The NCAA competition is both three-position small bore and standing air rifle. Some of the above gained experience with small bore while in high school but many did not. They had only participated in air rifle.

The Georgia high school graduates have transitioned well. The 91 have earned 41All-American honors, one was a NCAA Individual Champion (Beth Tidmore – Woodward Academy to University of Memphis), one was selected for the US National Team and nine to the National Development Team. Three have served as assistant rifle coaches at universities and one as head coach. Another former GHSA competitor was the first to be approved by the NCAA to compete in NCAA competitions as a disabled athlete.

Obviously there have been many GHSA riflery competitors of remarkable skills who chose not to compete in the NCAA. It is interesting that only 26 of the above 91 were GHSA championship medalists (28.6%). They did however earn a total of 36 medals   (16 gold, 9 silver & 11 bronze). Also, only 46 of them (20%) were included in the 228 athletes selected to the high school all-state teams through 2018.

There would probably be even more GHSA graduates competing in the NCAA if Georgia had more universities involved. Only two universities in Georgia compete in NCAA rifle competitions, the University of North Georgia and Georgia Southern University.

40-year-old Chadwick Haldeman

The Spalding County Sheriff’s Office has arrested 40-year-old Chadwick Haldeman of 71 Ramsey Circle Griffin Georgia, on multiple criminal charges relating to the abuse of a 7-month-old child. According to Sheriff Darrell Dix, “We received a call from Spalding Regional Hospital about the child and investigators responded to meet with hospital staff. The mother had brought the child to the hospital believing that it was suffering from an infection and pink eye. The child was lethargic and in obvious distress. Tests on the baby showed that it was suffering from multiple breaks including left arm, left leg, left elbow, right shoulder, spinal fractures, broken ribs, multiple burns that appear to have been caused by a cigarette, and a traumatic brain injury.

The child was flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for treatment and surgery to relieve brain swelling.” “Based on what happened to the child, a search warrant was executed at a home located at 71 Ramsey Circle, where Chadwick Haldeman was taken into custody. In an interview conducted with Haldeman by Investigators, he admitted in detail to methodically hurting the child, how and what he did, but stopped short of a motive. The confession was graphic, detailed, and my Investigators describe it as sickening. What was done to this 7-month old baby was nothing short of barbaric.” “In 32 years of being in law enforcement I have never encountered anything this evil, nor have any of my Investigators. Haldeman was cold, calculated and intentional in his actions. In his confession he attempted to minimize the injuries to the child but did not minimize his involvement. The investigation is ongoing, and we are actively gathering information as to the child’s mother and others and their possible roles, negligence, or culpability in this case.

We have questions that still need to be answered, and more criminal charges may be coming based on those answers. As of right now the child is listed in critical condition and is on life support. Haldeman is currently being held in the Spalding Jail without bond and is facing the following criminal charges: Aggravated Assault with Intent to Murder – 2 Counts Cruelty to Children in the 1st Degree – 5 Counts Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon – 4 Counts Aggravated Battery Possession of THC Oil – 23 Counts Possession of THC Oil with Intent to Distribute – 23 Counts Possession of Marijuana Less Than 1 Ounce

Appeal of Child Killer Denied by State Supreme Court

The Georgia Supreme Court this week ruled to deny the appeal made by convicted child murderer Shane Clifton Collett who was found guilty of the murder of 9 year old Skylar Dials .
Collett’s defense team sought to overturn his conviction in the December 2012 murder, citing a lack of convincing evidence in the case but the state’s highest court ruled that sufficient evidence was presented beyond a reasonable doubt, and that the conviction and sentence of life without the possibility of parole, would stand.
Skylar Dials was walking to a friend’s house on the morning of Friday, December 21, 2012 when she was abducted by Collett and murdered. Following his arrest early the following morning, he was charged with the offenses of malice murder, felony murder, concealing a death and first degree cruelty to children.
He was convicted by a jury in Spalding County Superior Court in January of 2015.
