PIKE COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM

The Pike County School System was informed Oct. 4 that a student enrolled in the Pike County School District was being treated at an Atlanta area hospital. In light of the circumstances surrounding the recent illness and death of Leland Shomate a Pike County student, the superintendent notified Department of Public Health District 4 health officials who consulted with hospital officials to determine the current hospitalized  student’s illness did not pose a safety concern for the students at the school.

The School District received an update from Public Health Monday afternoon Oct. 5 that there is no connection between the student who is currently hospitalized and the student who passed away.

Public Health confirms a viral infection in the hospitalized student, which may cause a wide range of symptoms including fever, vomiting and/or diarrhea. It could manifest itself as the common cold or the “stomach bug.” The District will continue its disinfecting protocols.

Pike School Officials have asked Parents to share with children the importance of hand washing as this is the most effective preventive measure. Although the ill student is a Primary School Student, absenteeism at the Primary School today is less than 1%. If your child becomes ill and runs a fever, vomits or has diarrhea, please do not send them to school until symptoms subside.
