On Monday evening, officers from the Griffin Police Department responded to 617 West Broad Street in reference to a shots fired call. Upon their arrival, they found a black male victim lying on a couch in the living room deceased from a single gunshot wound to the neck. The victim was identified as 18 year old Gideon Phazion Mays of Griffin. Investigators also responded to the scene, and after further inquiry, determined that the incident was the result of an accidental shooting.
Prior to the 911 call, another male who was in the residence with the victim was handling a weapon when it accidentally discharged, striking the victim. The shooter has been identified as 23 year old Terriez Stroud. Shortly after the incident Stroud made contact with investigators and was cooperating with the investigation, and evidence gathered at the scene was found to be consistent with statements made by Stroud. At this time, Stroud has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. He is currently being held at the Spalding County jail.
