Starting on Monday, August 18th, City of Griffin utility customers will be able to select the date that their utility statement will be due. This program is only available to customers who have City provided electric and/or water. Customers with County water service will not qualify.“The reason we can now offer this service is the completion of our automated metering projects for both electric and water,” Electric Director Bill Bosch explained. “In the past, electric and water meters were read manually, and had to be read by specific routes for efficiency. Our AMI/AMR electric and water meters give us the ability to read the meters on demand, eliminating the need for routes based on meter location.”

Four different due dates are being offered; the 3rd, 10th, 17th or 23 of the month, with the goal being to help the due date coincide with the customer’s income stream. These due dates will be adjusted slightly as necessary to accommodate weekends and holidays. “We realize that many individuals receive only one income check per month,” Bosch said. “By timing the due date with the income check, we are hoping that this will help our customers avoid late fees and possible disconnection of service.”

To assist customers in selecting the most advantageous due date, the City recommends that customers make an appointment to come in and meet with a customer service representative. The representative will review a calendar that illustrates the billing date and the due date, which is the last date to pay before delinquent charges apply. Appointments may be scheduled by calling 770-229-6403. For customers who are unable to come into the office during business hours, an application that can be completed and returned to the City will be available for download on the City of Griffin web site. A customer service representative will call to verify the information before the change is made in the billing system.

Depending on the customer’s present due date and the new due date selected, it may be possible that the customer will receive two utility statements in the month the change takes place, or the number of days of service may be longer that first month. Once a change is requested, the new due date must remain in effect for a twelve month period.
