GSCS to hold Q&A Session with High School Students and Law Enforcement

On Tuesday, December 15, the Griffin-Spalding County School System (GSCS) will hold a question and answer session between high school students and a panel of law enforcement officers. The Q&A session will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Griffin Auditorium located at 234 E. Taylor Street in Griffin, GA.

Executive Director of Secondary Education Dr. Donald Warren and Executive Director of Communication and Partnerships Adam Pugh held meetings with student council groups at A.Z. Kelsey Academy, Griffin High School and Spalding High School this month. During those meetings, through conversations concerning recent events, students determined that it would be beneficial for them to have a Q&A session with law enforcement.

Prior to the December 15 event, a survey will be sent to all high school students providing them the opportunity to voice their questions and concerns. The completed surveys will be put into a lottery drawing for a limited number of students to attend, ask their questions and receive direct answers in-person. The limited in-person audience will be seated using social distancing.  The event is by invitation only but will be streamed live and recorded to view on school district social media.

Griffin Police Department Chief Mike Yates, Spalding County Sheriff Darrell Dix and Maurice Raines, liaison for the Georgia State Patrol in the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety are confirmed to participate on the law enforcement panel. Additional law enforcement from other jurisdictions will be added.

Executive Director of Administrative Services Anthony Aikens stated, “We hope the dialogue in this event will help communicate expectations of administrators, school resource officers and students in various situations. The law enforcement officers can share their perspective and training from the police academy and students can voice concerns, receive direct answers and hopefully all stakeholders can learn and work as a team to improve our community.”
