Anne Street Elementary School is one of 22 schools in the state to be awarded the Georgia Early Learning Reading Initiative Grant. The Georgia Early Learning Reading Initiative Grant is made possible by the partnership between Mitchell’s literacy-based nonprofit the Share the Magic Foundation, the Georgia Governor’s Office of Student Achievement, and the Get Georgia Reading Campaign.
The Georgia Early Learning Reading Initiative is leveraging Super Bowl LIII to generate excitement about reading. Before Super Bowl Sunday, Anne Street Elementary will receive materials inspired by former University of Georgia football star and Super Bowl LI champion, Malcolm Mitchell. The grant will provide Anne Street Elementary with: 65 hardback copies of Malcolm Mitchell’s book, The Magician’s Hat, for each second-grade student currently enrolled at the school.
A Teacher’s Guide for The Magician’s Hat that includes standards-based vocabulary and writing lessons and additional extension activities for each second-grade teacher; An animated video of Malcolm Mitchell reading The Magician’s Hat; Motivational video messages from Malcolm Mitchell and friends to energize and excite young readers; and an invitation to register classrooms to participate in READBowl, Jan. 7 – Feb. 3, a free virtual reading competition designed to increase the number of minutes Pre-K to eighth-grade students read in school.
As a Georgia Early Learning Reading Initiative Grant recipient, Anne Street Elementary will also receive a $250 First Book Marketplace gift certificate to purchase new books and resources for their students.
Finally, on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, every school receiving the Georgia Early Learning Reading Initiative Grant will celebrate Literacy and Super Bowl LIII by distributing the books and making it a special literacy day for their second-grade students.
“We are thrilled that our school was awarded this grant! Early language and literacy research is clear that students who are not proficient readers by third grade will face daunting challenges as they shift from learning to read to reading to learn. Governor Deal stated, ‘Early language development and literacy are vital skills for putting our young children on the path to success.’ Anne Street Elementary is committed to the language and literacy development of our young learners.

We believe that the Georgia Early Learning Reading Initiative Grant will not only generate excitement for reading by leveraging Super Bowl LIII, but it will also improve the early language and literacy development of our young learners by providing age-appropriate literature to the home,” stated Anne Street Elementary Principal Pearla Hodo.
