Firefighters entered the home in an attempt to locate any possible occupants. The residence was owned by Jimmy and Christi Lewis. Fire Department personnel found Mrs. Christi Lewis non responsive and her 6 year old son also unconscious. Both individuals were removed from the building and Spalding EMS administered treatment but Coroner Foster pronounced Mrs. Lewis dead. Her 6 year old son was rushed to Spalding Regional Hospital and then airlifted by Emory Life Flight Helicopter air ambulance, based at the Griffin Spalding Airport, to the Augusta Burn Unit in critical condition. Corner Sonny Foster advised WKEU news that both Mrs. Lewis and he son were over come with smoke and soot being inhaled. It was believed that the 6 year old was without oxygen for several minutes.
It took a while to locate Mr Jimmy Lewis who left for work about 6:30 am as is local contractor. He was advised of the tragedy by Coroner Foster.
