Saturday, the Griffin High School Lady Bears basketball team will travel to the campus of Columbus State University for semifinal round action in the 5A playoffs where they will take on the Lady Wolves of Buford for the right to advance to next week’s state championship game.

The Lady Bears, under the direction of head coach Veronica Lee, currently hold the best overall record in 5A with a mark of 28-1 with Buford right on their heels at 27-2.
The teams share other striking similarities as well:
Both carry lengthy winning streaks into Saturday’s Final Four match-up—Buford has won 7 straight outings while the Lady Bears are riding the crest of an 8 game streak.  The last loss for each team came back on Saturday, January 28: on that date Griffin suffered its only setback of the year against Columbia and Buford took just its 2nd loss when it fell to Wesleyan.  Both the Lady Bears and the Lady Wolves have been impressive on the defensive end of the court through the first 3 rounds of the playoff tournament: Buford has allowed an average of only 45 points per game while Griffin has given up just a shade over 40.  All the wins posted by both schools in the playoffs have come by double digit margins.
Saturday’s Lady Bears-Buford semifinal game is scheduled to get underway at 6 PM. The winner will advance to the state championship game against the winner of the other Final Four match-up which pits Southwest DeKalb against Flowery Branch. The 5A state title game will be played Wednesday, March 8, at Stegeman Coliseum on the University of Georgia campus in Athens.
